I don't think it's unreasonable to at least wish Apple had maintained that "standard" of accessibility, while improving upon and adding to it with their unmatched design and manufacturing prowess. The internals aren't quite as neat as the inside of a G5, but there's an intelligence to the design and a bevy of friendly plastic flippers and rails to help you get every component in or out. I can (and have) opened up my dad's similar-vintage Dell tower and, without any firsthand knowledge of Dell's service procedures, changed a number of components and structures, including the power supply. Well, but I think that was Grafux's point: Tower PCs are, for the most part, entirely accessible to even only moderately skilled individuals. They were never intended for an end user to start ripping out structural components such as CPU mounts or power supplies, they were intended for the service techs who know every in and out of the system. Still no difference whatsoever.Īny other ideas, or is my guess that the motherboard is dead to probably the right one? I've tried pressing the PMU reset button on the motherboard, and pulling the green lithium battery and leaving it unplugged for 1/2 an hour. But it does not respond at all to a press of the power button. When the AC power is pluggged in, it makes a slight "crackle" sound, and the sounds of a relay opening or closing the contacts. The white power LED on the front panel comes on dimly. So it came to me installing the new one, as it is a bit tricky to get it in and out of the G5.īut, after replacing the power supply, it is still playing dead.

He had previously taken it to the apple store, and they had quoted him ~$500 to replace the PSU, or that he could order a replacement online and change it out himself. It is not covered under the extended Apple Power supply replacement plan. It had suffered a power supply failure late last year. I've got a dual 2.0 G5 Power Mac i've been working on for my stepcousin.
